Night running and safety

After dark, the priority is to be seen by others and to see where you put your feet.

  • Wear a light-coloured top with reflective details on the parts that move (ankles, wrists): drivers spot them much sooner.
  • Use a headlamp or chest light to see the ground, and a red light on your back.
  • Choose lit, familiar routes; where there’s no pavement, run facing traffic; keep one earbud out or the volume low.
  • Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back, and carry your phone; Apple Watch can call emergency services (Emergency SOS).
  • Trust your instincts: change route if a place feels wrong, and run with a friend or a group when you can.
