Pain while running
Some discomfort is normal when running; pain that is sharp, in one spot or changes how you run is not.
- Usually normal: burning muscles in hard efforts, heavy legs, soreness on both sides peaking 1 to 2 days after a session and fading within 3 to 4 days.
- Stop if pain is sharp, in one precise spot, makes you limp, worsens as you run, or is in a joint or bone.
- Rule of thumb: up to 3 out of 10, gone by the next morning, is fine; above that, cut back or stop.
- See a physiotherapist or doctor if pain lasts beyond 1 to 2 weeks, keeps worsening, swells, or is there at rest or at night.
Chest pain, dizziness or fainting: stop at once and get medical help.
General information, not a diagnosis. If a pain is sharp, local, gets worse or lasts, see a doctor or a physiotherapist.
