Sprained ankle
A sprained ankle is a stretched or torn ligament, usually after rolling the foot inwards. Most heal well with early, gentle movement.
- Signs: pain on the outer ankle, swelling, sometimes bruising, painful walking.
- First 2 to 3 days: protect and raise it, use a compression bandage, cold can ease the pain, and walk as much as pain allows.
- Then: move the ankle and rebuild strength and balance (standing on one leg). Running usually resumes after 1 to 3 weeks for a mild sprain and 3 to 6 weeks or more for a bad one, starting short and flat.
- See a doctor if you cannot take 4 steps, heard a crack, the bone hurts when pressed, the foot is numb or misshapen, or it is no better after a week.
General information, not a diagnosis. If a pain is sharp, local, gets worse or lasts, see a doctor or a physiotherapist.
